How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes
- Take the whole number. That is your hours. For 7.8, that is 7 hours.
- Take the part after the decimal point and multiply it by 60. 0.8 × 60 = 48 minutes.
- Put them together: 7.8 hours = 7 hours 48 minutes (7:48).
If the minutes come out with a decimal, multiply that leftover by 60 again to get seconds. For example, 2.555 hours = 2 hours 33.3 minutes = 2 hours 33 minutes 18 seconds.

Why your paycheck shows decimal hours
Payroll software multiplies hours by your hourly rate, so it stores time as a decimal. If your pay stub says 38.75 hours, that is 38 hours 45 minutes, not 38 hours 75 minutes. Use the converter above to check that the hours on your stub match your own records.
