How to convert military time to decimal hours

Military time is already a 24-hour clock, so converting it to decimal hours only means turning the minutes into a fraction of an hour.

  1. Take the first two digits as hours. 1745 → 17 hours.
  2. Divide the last two digits (minutes) by 60. 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75.
  3. Add them: 17 + 0.75 = 17.75 decimal hours.
Decimal hours = HH + (MM ÷ 60), using the 4-digit military time HHMM

For hours worked, subtract the clock-in from the clock-out in decimal: 1515 (15.25) − 0645 (6.75) = 8.50 hours, minus a 30-minute break (0.50) = 8.00 hours.

Why time cards use military time

Many time clocks print punches in military time because it removes AM/PM mistakes and makes subtraction easier. A punch of 1730 can never be confused with 5:30 in the morning. Payroll then converts the punches to decimal hours so they can be multiplied by an hourly rate.

How to convert military time to standard time

Going the other way, add 12 to any PM hour except 12 PM, and write 12 AM hours as 00. For example, 8:15 PM = 2015 and 12:05 AM = 0005.

Midnight: 0000 or 2400?

0000 is midnight at the start of a day, and 2400 describes the same moment as the end of the previous day. Under the international 24-hour standard (ISO 8601), 24:00 on one day is the same instant as 00:00 the next day, not one second before midnight.

Because this can be ambiguous, many organizations avoid 2400 and write 2359 for the end of a day or 0001 for the start. The US Navy and Marine Corps correspondence manual switched from a 0001–2400 day to 0000–2359 in 2015. On time cards, midnight is almost always written as 0000.

How to say military time

Military time in Excel

If a time card exports military times as numbers like 1730 in cell A2, convert them to decimal hours with:

=INT(A2/100)+MOD(A2,100)/60

For a 1730 entry this returns 17.5. Hours worked between a clock-in in A2 and clock-out in B2 (same day) is =(INT(B2/100)+MOD(B2,100)/60)-(INT(A2/100)+MOD(A2,100)/60). See the time to decimal in Excel guide for more formulas.
